Things to Do / Area Attractions

Things to do in the Area:

If you are planning to arrive Friday night:

Lewis County and the North Country offer fun & easy to access summertime activities. If you are planning to arrive with the morning and early afternoon available before the wedding, the following is a list of possible activities you can consider: Plus use the Lewis County Web Site to help plan any weekend activities,

Golfing:

Lewis County has courses in every corner of the County. Most likely a group of interested golfers will plan an outing in one of the area courses. Let Jeremy know if you think you would like to join in, and he will organize tee-times.

Hiking:

Whetstone Golf State Park on Route 26 between Lowville and Turin was built around a large shale gorge. A hiking trail circles the gorge featuring some dramatic views from the top. The park has other trails as well, of varying difficulty. Whetstone also has a campground & a lifeguard swimming area. Admission fees apply to use the park.

Swimming:

For a streamside dip a local favorite is at Whittaker Park in Martinsburg, a hamlet about 5 miles South of Lowville on Route 26. At this park you can take a short hike down to the stream edge and swim at the base of a small waterfall. The Park is free to use and has picnic tables and a pavilion as well as camping for a small donation. We will post a map outlining Whittaker's location once the wedding gets closer.

Shopping:

Croghan:

The village of Croghan has some cute shops. These include the Croghan Candy Kitchen, where the owners Jeff & Rese Roose make their own chocolates on the premises. Down the street, the Croghan Meat Market is where you can find Croghan Bologna, a local favorite. To round out the excursion, stop by Mariley's Hardware Store, a two-story emporium straight from the past; selling everything from hunting clothing and boots to aged cheddar cheese and syrup.

Lowville:

If you find you are pressed for time and only have time for a quick stop, the Lowville Producer's Dairy Store on Route 12 as you enter Lowville is open Saturday and sells locally produced cheeses, as well as Croghan bologna & syrup.

Sackett's Harbor:

This is a historic village on Lake Ontario with numerous restaurants, a beautiful waterfront, a cute downtown area and a historic battlefield from the war of 1812. Sackett's is approximately 40 miles from Lowville and 5 miles north of Watertown.

Tennis:

In Lowville as well as Boonville there are municipal courts, which in general are underused and available if you want to bring your racquet. Lowville's high school courts are usually available as well and feature a slightly better surface than the Municipal courts. Boonville's courts are newer than those in Lowville. All are free.

If you have more time and want to check out the larger area:

Stay Over & Canoe or Fish at the Stillwater Reservoir:

See Accommodations for the web page connections to Still Water Reservoir. There is both the Stillwater hotel and a new bed and breakfast scheduled to open this May called Northern Lights offering accommodations. Stillwater is a long trip from the farm to the Adirondack lake (the length of travel is long due to back roads more than actual milage, which is 34 miles; the last 9 miles is gravel road). At the reservoir, though, you can stay at the waterside and rent canoes, kayaks & fishing boats. This would be a nice option for someone able to stay at least two or even three nights and wanted to experience Northern NY in a more wilderness setting.

The Thousand Islands& Canada:

The well-known gateway to Canada is only approximately 70 miles from Lowville and easy to get to. Kingston Ontario is a beautiful city and a nice day excursion into Canada. It is 93 miles North of Lowville. Alexandria Bay on the US side of the border is a busy tourist town in the summer, located on the water and featuring trips to Boldt Castle, a local historical site located on it's own island. From Alex Bay you can take boat tours of the Thousand Islands as well, and charter fishing boats. It is 55 miles North of Lowville. Get more info by calling 1-800-847-5263 or http://www.visit1000islands.com/seaway or email info@visit1000islands.com.

The Adirondacks:

If you are driving from the South, you will note the exit for Route 28, five miles south of Boonville, which is the main road into the Adirondack's from the West. Rt. 28 will take you through the towns of Old Forge, Racquette Lake, and up to Blue Mountain Lake.   A couple of activities offered in this area include White Water Rafting, (through Whitewater Challengers, Inc. at: 800-443-RAFT or www.wcRAFTING.com ) or the Adirondack Museum (contact them at www.adkmuseum.org).  The Adirondacks can also be easily accessed easily from the North of the farm via Rt. 3.  This route goes through Cranberry Lake, Tupper & Saranac Lake, making connecting routes to Lake Placid.  The route is very drivable but windy, and Lake Placid takes a good 3+ hours to get to. For general information on the Adirondacks, call 800-487-6867, or check out www.adk.com.

Cooperstown, NY:

Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Glimmerglass Opera is a popular destination in the summer and a possible side route for anyone coming through Utica to get to the wedding. Cooperstown is South of Utica on Route 80. It is 102 miles from Lowville. Call 800-843-3364 for more information.
